A public access channel is required, by federal and state law, for every cable TV company that has 21 or more stations. The channel is expressly reserved, for free, for non-commercial programs and messages. You don’t have to be a group or organization to utilize the public access channel. You don’t even have to be a cable TV subscriber. You just need to be a local person to use the public access channel. This is a great resource and it can be an educative tool and a forum for discussion of ideas that don’t get on commercial TV because advertisers won’t fund them.
The Chenango Green Party members and friends are regularly scheduling programs on the Adelphia cable access channel 5 in Norwich which serves 4500 subscribers in North Norwich, the city and town of Norwich and Plymouth. The Green Party has broadcast videos on electronic voting machines, a dialogue over the Iraq War between Delhi protesters and counter-protesters, an ex-Marine’s talk on Iraq and military recruiting, and a program on industrial hemp. We will continue to present programs of local interest. Residents of southern Chenango County are served by Time Warner Cable out of Binghamton, where channel 4 is the public access channel. The Green Scene is a regular program on Wednesday evenings.
If your cable company does not have a public access channel, the Green Party has experience in getting the company to comply with the law. Contact us.
